the coffee conservation award

The Coffee Conservation Award was developed to provide an incentive for forest conservation on coffee farms. By recognizing a single, ecologically significant farm from a single country each year, we hope to raise awareness worldwide about the importance of forest habitat in agricultural landscapes.

The Coffee Conservation Award is a joint venture between Cooper Ecological Monitoring, Inc., Roast Magazine and the American Birding Association through its Birder's Exchange program.

Finca El Porvenir comprises a group of farms between 1,000–1,600 m in elevation on the slopes of Cerro El Tigre, part of the isolated Sierra Tecapa–Chinameca range in eastern El Salvador. The farm clearly demonstrated strong forest and wildlife conservation efforts. Little was known about the wildlife of this region prior to a recent bird inventory by SalvaNatura in spring 2010, spurred by their submission to the conservation award. This survey revealed the presence of four range-restricted bird species found only in northern Central America. Finca El Porvenir will receive a $1,000 cash prize to further meaningful, science-based conservation practices on the winning farms. Read the full press release here.
