Excerpt From the Article

“Direct trade was not designed as a certification or a fixed set of standards. In fact, it was the opposite—a dynamic approach to buying and selling coffees derived from practical needs and strong convictions about the meaning and value of partnership. As such, direct trade never attempted the impossible task of developing a formulaic system of metrics, instead relying on constant communication, reevaluation and adjustment. It had rules, as any good relationship must, but not requirements. Perhaps most importantly, it wasn’t meant as a single-use instrument. Its application was meant to be long- term, with a real commitment to work together year after year facing obstacles together and persisting through difficulties.”
